Evolution of cellular complexity and other remarkable features in Gemmataceae: Complex bacterial lineages defy prokaryotic trends
Analysis of regional atrophy on brain imaging compared with cognitive function in the elderly and in patients with dementia – cross-sectional and longitudinal evaluation
The aim of the PhD project is to compare a quantitative and qualitative image analysis of regional cerebral atrophy with cognitive function in the elderly persons.
Graphene Based Inks for Printed Electronics
The outstanding properties of graphene make it attractive ink filler for conductive inks which plays an important role in printed electronics. This thesis focuses on the ink formulation based on graphene and graphene oxide (GO).
Biosensing platforms using graphene based bioreactive nanostructures with various dimensions
This thesis focuses on concepting, developing and testing of biosensors where nanomaterials including graphene gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) constitute the biosensors.
Optimal adaptive designs and adaptive randomization techniques for clinical trials
In this Ph.D. thesis, we investigate how to optimize the design of clinical trials by constructing optimal adaptive designs, and how to implement the design by adaptive randomization.
Translating Cardiac and Cardiometabolic GWAS Using Zebrafish
The overall objective of the thesis is to establish large-scale, imaged-based screens in zebrafish embryos and larvae to examine candidate genes for their effects on heart rate and rhythm, as well as on early-onset atherosclerosis and dyslipidemia.
Adherence to drug treatment and interpretation of treatment effects
The overall aim of this thesis was to investigate factors with relevance to adherence, to estimate treatment effects with the time-based Delay of Event (DoE) measure in anticoagulant preventive treatments, and to explore how lay people responded to the DoE measure, as compared with established measures, regarding treatment decisions and effect interpretation.
Avian Malaria and Interspecific Interactions in Ficedula Flycatchers
Parasitism is a core theme in ecological and evolutionary studies. Despite this, there are still gaps in our knowledge regarding host-parasite interactions in nature.
Moving out, moving up, becoming employed: Studies in the residential segregation and social integration of immigrants in Sweden
This thesis investigates the complex relationship between residential segregation and social integration. The dominant discourse in Sweden and Europe sees residential segregation as hindering socioeconomic and cultural integration, creating parallel societies and even threatening the social cohesion of European societies.
Induction and repair of clustered DNA damage sites after exposure to ionizing radiation
This thesis aimes to specifically address questions regarding the requirement and involvement of DNA repair proteins in the repair of various types of radiation-induced DNA damage.
Asthma and Sleep Disturbances: Associations to Comorbidities and Asthma Control
This thesis aimed to investigate the associations between asthma control, asthma-related comorbidity, and sleep. Insomnia symptoms with asthma are common, and have commonly been explained by poor asthma control and asthma symptoms during the night, which affect most asthmatics to some degree.
Pharmacometric Models to Improve the Treatment and Development of Drugs against Tuberculosis
The aim of this thesis was to develop pharmacometric models to optimise the development and use of current and future drugs for treating tuberculosis.
The perception of actions and interactions: And the importance of context
The present thesis took a developmental and individual differences approach to understanding action perception and processing in infancy. The overarching aim was to understand the development of action perception and how individual differences contribute to the perception and processing of actions.
Structural Studies of Mn-X (X=Al, Bi): Permanent Magnetic Materials without Rare Earth Metals
How to generate and use electricity in a more efficient way is a major challenge for humankind. In this context, permanent magnets play an important role within a very broad range of electric power applications. The strongest magnets used today are mainly based on alloys that contain rare-earth metals, which are neither economical nor sustainable.
Working Life Among First-Line Managers and Their Subordinates in Elderly Care: an Empowerment Perspective
The aim of this thesis was to study the working life of first-line managers and their subordinates in elderly care from an empowerment perspective.
Learning based segmentation and generation methods for handwritten document images
Computerized analysis of handwritten documents is an active research area in image analysis and computer vision. The goal is to create tools that can be available for use at university libraries and for researchers in the humanities. Working with large collections of handwritten documents is very time consuming and many old books and letters remain unread for centuries.
Measuring Pregnancy Planning and the Effect of Childhood Abuse on Reproductive Health
The London Measure of Unplanned Pregnancy (LMUP) and the Swedish Pregnancy Planning Scale (SPPS) are two measurements of pregnancy planning. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and childhood abuse are stressful events that have been suggested to have both short- and long-term effects.
Change Point Detection with Applications to Wireless Sensor Networks
In this thesis work we develop a new algorithm for detecting joint changes in statistical behavior of multiple, simultaneously recorded, signals. Such signal analysis is commonly known as multivariate change point (CP) detection (CPD) and is of interest in many scientific and engineering applications.
Pathogenesis and Cell Biology of the Salmon Parasite Spironucleus salmonicida
In this thesis, the S. salmonicida genome was sequenced and compared to the genome of its diplomonad relative, the mammalian pathogen G. intestinalis (Paper I). Our analyses revealed large genomic differences between the two parasites that collectively suggests that S. salmonicida is more capable of adapting to different environments.
Wind Turbine Sound in Cold Climates
The increase in the number of wind turbines (WTs) in populated areas in cold climates increases the number of people potentially being affected by WT sound. Outdoor sound propagation is strongly dependent on meteorological conditions, however, limitations in the knowledge exist regarding the implications of meteorological conditions in cold climates.
Coercion and its Effects: Evidence from the Israel-Palestine Conflict
This dissertation studies the efficacy and effects of coercive policies in the context of the Israel-Palestine conflict. The four composite essays investigate the impact of Israel’s practice of house demolition and construction of a separation barrier on Palestinians’ conflict preferences and use of violence, as well as the broader consequences of these policies for Palestinian communities.
