Uppsala Forum on Democracy, Peace and Justice (Uppsala University) kindly invites you to a guest lecture titled “Subsidiarity, the European Union and Sweden: Theory and Practice” with Uppsala Forum Visiting Fellow Samuli Miettinen, University Lecturer and Docent at the University of Helsinki and Associate Professor at Tallinn University.

Subsidiarity, the principle that the EU should act only in so far as an objective cannot be achieved by its Member States, is a deeply contested concept in EU law. It is especially interesting for Sweden since the Riksdag is one of the most active national parliaments on this issue, perhaps even a superpower of subsidiarity.

In this lecture, Dr Samuli Miettinen examines subsidiarity claims in and after EU legislative processes during recent years. How have the Member States argued cases before the Court of Justice? Have they been successful? How have national parliaments, the Riksdag in particular, used their new powers to issue “reasoned opinions”?

The lecture further develops work originally begun in Uppsala and published with Joonas Tervo in Europarättslig Tidskrift 1/2017.
