The measurement of stable isotopes can help to understand the cycling of elements in many systems that ecologists are interested in. In aquatic research, stable isotope analysis provide an excellent tool to investigate the structure of food webs. Therefore, stable isotope tracers can help us to characterize trophic relationships, to identify the basal sources, or to quantify the relative inputs into the system. This lecture will give an introduction in the field of stable isotope ecology and will offer and overview on the use of the two most commonly applied stable isotopes in freshwater research: nitrogen (15N) and carbon (13C).
