The detection of gravitational waves by LIGO and Virgo has provided a novel angle to understand gravitational physics and holds the promise to offer new insights into fundamental physics as well as astrophysics and cosmology.
This lecture will provide a pedagogical introduction to gravitational waves. Basic concepts in General Relativity will be introduced, including the spacetime metric and Einstein’s equation in its linearized form. We will then study gravitational-wave solutions, focusing in particular on gravitational-wave emission. In order to better understand gravitational waves, we will compare and contrast them to the waves we already know and love – electromagnetic waves. Finally, basic principles behind gravitational-wave detection will be discussed. No previous exposure to General Relativity will be assumed.
The lecture will conclude with a discussion on how current ground-based interferometers (LIGO, Virgo) and future space-based experiments (LISA) are likely to impact our understanding of gravitational physics.
The lecture is an obligatory teaching test for those applying for admittance as docent and it should be possible for students and others with basic academic education in the relevant field to follow it. The lecture will last for 45 minutes and afterwards the audience may ask questions. The lecture will be given in English.
