Tropical ecosystems house both the majority of Earth's biodiversity and human population. They provide immense benefits to humans, not only locally, but also at the global scale. At the same time, they are exposed to acute challenges including extreme weather and natural disasters accelerated by climate change, high rates of poverty and political instability, and resource exploitation and conflict. Threats to the integrity and stability of tropical ecosystems are associated with increased risks to human security and may hinder achievement of sustainable development goals.  In this lecture, I will introduce the key concepts of sustainability, sustainable development, and human security with an emphasis on tropical ecosystems.  I will discuss some of the key concepts in the context of a detailed case study from the island of Puerto Rico.
