Välkommen till ett öppet seminarium inom ramen för AI4Research. Sebastian Karkowski talar om hur spelbilden i schackturneringar påverkas när artificiell intelligens kommer in i bilden.
We take a resource-based view (RBV) to investigate how the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) affects competitive capabilities and performance. Following prior work in using chess as a controlled setting for studying strategic decisions, we compare the same chess players’ capabilities and performance across conventional (i.e., human vs. human), centaur (i.e., human-machine vs. human-machine), and machine (i.e., machine vs. machine) chess games. We find that, in the presence of AI chess engines, human chess-playing capability is substituted, yet a new source of persistent heterogeneity emerges as humans interact with chess engines. Our analysis further shows that this human-machine interaction capability is unrelated to traditional human chess-playing capability. We contribute to the RBV by describing how the advance of AI-based technologies changes the sources of competitive advantage by driving interrelated dynamics of resource substitution and complementarity.
