Viruses that infect bacteria, or bacteriophages (phages), show promise as therapeutic agents controlling the expansion of harmful bacterial populations. We study phage infections in the gut microbiota, where bacteria and their viruses represent the most abundant entities but where the role of phages in modulating intestinal bacterial communities and their mechanisms remain unclear.
We use animal models to determine how phages and bacteria interact in the intestinal tract and found that their densities are determined by multiple factors including (i) the spatial distribution of both populations along and across the intestine, (ii) the bacterial physiological state, which impacts on the phage virulence, and (iii) the expansion of their genetic diversity driven by coevolutionary dynamics and phage host jumps.
Our data suggest that multiple dynamics can take place in parallel: their knowledge offers the opportunity to designing antibacterial strategies using therapeutic phages selected to be active in vivo.
