The pendulum is the reference model for describing periodic phenomena in Nature. The aim of this lecture is to examine and understand the motion of a pendulum.
The pendulum is the reference model for describing periodic phenomena in Nature. The aim of this lecture is to examine and understand the motion of a pendulum. Its motion will mainly be treated in the limit of small-amplitude oscillations but the pendulum phase portrait and large-amplitude oscillations will also be partly covered. To this end, during the lecture we will do the following:
(i) discuss some examples of periodic phenomena in Nature;
(ii) introduce the model of the pendulum;
(iii) derive the equation of its motion;
(iv) analyse the general solution to the equation of motion in the limit of small-amplitude oscillations;
(v) calculate analytically and measure experimentally the period of pendulum oscillations;
(vi) estimate the measurement uncertainty;
(vii) consider the pendulum motion beyond the small-amplitude approximation.
